A fracture that's easy to miss, and important to treat correctly.
The scaphoid is a small wrist bone, and its fracture is one of the most common wrist bone injuries, though it's frequently mistaken for a simple wrist strain. It causes tenderness or pain at the base of the thumb where it meets the wrist, an area known as the anatomical snuffbox.
It's most common in young adults and adolescents after a fall on an outstretched arm or a high-velocity injury such as a motorcycle accident. A scaphoid fracture can be difficult to treat: a small crack typically requires six weeks in a thumb splint, while a complete break requires surgery. Because of the bone's limited blood supply, the fracture sometimes doesn't heal completely, a complication called delayed union.
Careful, monitored rehab given the bone's healing challenges.
Because scaphoid fractures can be slow to heal, we work closely with your physician's timeline to safely restore wrist motion and strength once healing allows.
