Distal Radius Fracture (Colles, Smith)

A common wrist fracture from a fall on an outstretched arm or a direct blow, treated with reduction, splinting, or surgery depending on severity.

One of the most common wrist fractures.

Distal radius fractures, including the Colles and Smith fracture patterns, are commonly caused by a fall on an outstretched arm or a direct blow. Common symptoms include pain, tenderness, and visible deformity, and X-rays are used to confirm the fracture.

Treatment often involves a closed reduction, gently moving the bones back into alignment. When the bones can't be repositioned manually, an open reduction is used, sometimes with wires, pins, or screws to hold the bones in place while they heal.

Early intervention and rehabilitation help reduce pain, increase range of motion, and ultimately restore strength and function, and custom splints or wrist supports are often recommended to support optimal healing.
