Skier's Thumb (Gamekeeper's Thumb)

A ligament injury at the base of the thumb from a forceful outward force, common in skiing and football.

A ligament injury from a forceful thumb movement.

Skier's thumb occurs when a traumatic force forces the thumb outward or backward, damaging the ulnar collateral ligament at the base of the thumb's knuckle joint. It's common in football and skiing, often from a ski pole or a direct blow.

Symptoms include swelling, pain around the thumb's knuckle, and joint instability. In some cases, a small piece of bone is pulled off along with the ligament, called an avulsion fracture.

Bracing or splinting is the most common treatment for partial tears. Complete tears sometimes require surgical repair.
