Understanding Low Back Pain

One of the most common conditions people experience, and one of the most treatable when the source is properly identified.

Extremely common, and usually very treatable.

An estimated 80% of people experience low back pain at some point in their lives, and roughly 15 to 20% of people experience it in any given year. It's one of the leading causes of lost work time, costing an estimated 100 billion dollars annually in the U.S. in lost productivity and medical expenses.

The good news is that most people recover within a few weeks. Research shows that people with back pain typically return to work within about four weeks, and around 90% see substantial recovery. Like a common cold, low back pain is something you feel, and it usually resolves, though it's also possible to experience it again later.

Active exercise, rather than prolonged rest, has been shown to reduce disability and help prevent future episodes, which is central to how Physical Therapy approaches low back pain.
