A sideways curve with many possible causes.
Scoliosis refers to a lateral curve of the spine, described as a single 'C' curve or a double 'S' curve, and is generally defined as a curve greater than 10 degrees. Mild scoliosis falls between 10 and 20 degrees, intermediate between 20 and 40 degrees, and severe cases exceed 40 degrees.
Scoliosis affects an estimated 2 to 3 million people, with no single cure. About 80% of cases are idiopathic, meaning there's no obvious cause, and it can appear at any age, from infancy through adulthood, affecting males and females at similar rates overall, though progression is more common in women.
Symptoms can include pain, fatigue, and in severe cases, difficulty breathing, digesting, or walking. Bracing is typically used for moderate curves and surgery for more severe ones. While the research on exercise correcting a scoliosis curve is limited, a physical therapist can build a customized program to reduce pain, stretch tight muscles, and strengthen the core and spine.
A customized program built around your specific curve.
Every scoliosis curve is different, so we build an individualized program focused on reducing pain, releasing tight muscles, and strengthening the core and spinal support system.
