Lumbar Laminectomy/Discectomy

A common surgical procedure to remove herniated disc fragments and relieve pressure on the spinal nerves, followed by a structured rehab program.

Surgical relief for a herniated disc, followed by rehab.

A lumbar laminectomy and discectomy is a common surgery to remove fragments of an extruded, herniated disc. The surgeon makes an incision at the center of the spine, exposes a small amount of the bony lamina, and gently moves the spinal nerve aside to access and remove the damaged disc fragments.

Physical Therapy is typically recommended after surgery. While each person's rehab plan differs, the most common focus areas are flexibility, core strengthening, and lumbar stabilization. Patients who complete Physical Therapy after lumbar discectomy tend to have better outcomes than those who don't.
