A thigh muscle injury from explosive movement.
Quadriceps strains are frequently caused by running sprints or sudden stops that place explosive demand on the muscles at the front of the thigh. The injury can cause tenderness or a visible bulge at the site of the tear.
Lifting the thigh, as in a straight-leg raise, climbing or descending stairs, or getting up from a seated position, can all make the pain worse.
The quadriceps crosses both the hip and knee joints, so this injury is relevant to function at both, and is treated with the same staged, progressive approach.
A staged return from pain control to full sprinting.
Treatment progresses through reducing pain and swelling, then rebuilding flexibility and strength, before returning to the running and cutting movements that caused the strain.
