A tear in the muscle from rapid acceleration.

A strain is a small tear in a muscle. Hamstring strains, one of the most common injuries in running and field sports, are most often caused by rapid acceleration while sprinting or cutting.

Patients often describe a sudden pulling sensation or a pop at the back of the thigh at the moment of injury, followed by pain, swelling, and difficulty running.

Initial treatment is rest, ice, compression, and elevation, followed by a structured Physical Therapy program to restore flexibility and strength before returning to sport.

Hamstring Strains at Empower Physical Therapy & Aquatics Institute

A staged return, not a rush back to sprinting.

Hamstring strains that return to activity too early are notorious for re-injury, so treatment progresses deliberately from pain control through strength and finally sport-specific loading.

No referral needed. Most insurances accepted. In most cases, you can be seen within the same week.
