Hip Pointer

A direct blow to the iliac crest, common in contact sports like football, rugby, and soccer, that leaves the hip bruised, swollen, and tender.

A bruising injury from a direct blow to the hip bone.

A hip pointer is a contusion of the iliac crest, the bony ridge at the top of the pelvis, most often caused by a direct blow in contact sports such as football, rugby, and soccer.

The main signs are pain, swelling, and tenderness directly over the bony prominence on the side of the hip. Twisting, coughing, or contracting the abdominal muscles can all make the pain worse.

Most hip pointers are treated conservatively with rest, ice, and compression in the first days after injury, followed by a progressive return to activity.
