An overworked cushion between the IT band and the hip bone.
Bursas are small, fluid-filled sacs that reduce friction between tissues. Trochanteric bursitis is inflammation of the bursa that sits between the IT band and the greater trochanter, the bony point on the outer hip.
It's typically caused by excess stress on that bursa, whether from repetitive activity, muscle imbalance, or direct pressure. The hallmark symptom is pain over the outer hip that gets worse with prolonged walking, standing on the affected leg, or lying directly on that side at night.
Treatment usually combines rest, ice, and compression early on, followed by Physical Therapy: stretching, progressive strengthening, and in some cases a steroid injection for stubborn cases.
Reducing irritation, then correcting the mechanics behind it.
We combine hands-on treatment to calm the irritated bursa with a strengthening program that addresses the hip and core weakness that so often drives this condition.
