Meniscal Tears

A tear in the cartilage pads that cushion the knee, usually caused by bending and twisting the lower leg.

A tear in the knee's cartilage cushions.

The menisci (plural of meniscus) are cartilage pads that cushion the knee from compressive loads. A tear in one or both can happen when the lower leg is bent and twisted at the same time.

Common signs include joint line pain, locking, and swelling in the knee. On imaging, the tear can look like a parrot's beak or a bucket handle depending on its shape.

Initial treatment is rest, ice, and compression. Larger tears sometimes require arthroscopic surgery, though many respond well to a structured Physical Therapy program.
