Wear and tear on the knee's cartilage and cushioning pads.
Osteoarthritis is a condition in which the cartilage covering the ends of the femur and the top of the tibia gradually wears down. The knee also has two meniscal cartilage pads that can be affected.
As the cartilage becomes brittle and bone spurs develop, the joint becomes stiffer, range of motion decreases, and patients experience weakness, pain, and difficulty walking, climbing stairs, and getting in and out of chairs.
Physical Therapy can improve range of motion, strength, walking ability, and pain management. Aquatic therapy, with a personalized exercise program in the water, is often especially helpful given its low impact on the joint.
Building strength and motion without overloading the joint.
A combination of land-based strengthening and low-impact aquatic therapy helps manage pain while keeping the knee as strong and mobile as possible.
