A well-established surgery, with recovery driven by rehab.
Joint replacements are increasingly common, with hips and knees the most frequently replaced joints. Knee implants have improved substantially in design and fit over the past decade or more since the earliest total knee replacements in the 1950s.
Total knee replacement is typically considered when X-rays or other imaging reveal joint damage causing persistent, moderate-to-severe pain that hasn't responded to non-surgical treatment, along with a limited range of motion that affects quality of life.
Around 90% of patients experience a significant reduction in pain, feel better overall, and see improved joint function after surgery, though as with any procedure, there's always some risk that a revision could eventually be needed.
Physical Therapy plays a role both before and after surgery. A pre-surgical 'prehab' program of rehabilitative exercises has been shown to increase strength and speed later recovery, and post-surgical therapy is essential given the muscle weakness and motion limits that follow the procedure.
Prehab before surgery, guided rehab after.
We support patients on both sides of knee replacement: building strength beforehand to set up a smoother recovery, and guiding the post-surgical rehab that determines how much function you regain.
