The correct name for most kneecap pain.
Chondromalacia, a softening of the patellar cartilage, is a commonly used but often inaccurate label, since softening of the cartilage can really only be confirmed surgically. Patellofemoral pain is the more accurate diagnosis for pain or swelling that originates under the kneecap.
Treatment typically starts with rest, ice, and compression, with an emphasis on controlling swelling early on. Bracing, anti-inflammatory medication, and Physical Therapy, especially a gradual quadriceps-strengthening program, are all commonly helpful.
In some cases, foot orthotics can help improve the mechanics contributing to the pain. Surgery to realign the kneecap is rarely required.
Gradual quad strengthening, without aggravating the joint.
Treatment centers on a carefully progressed quadriceps and hip strengthening program, paired with swelling control and, when needed, bracing or orthotic support.
