Two common injuries, graded by severity.
Sprains and strains are common injuries encountered in daily life, recreation, and competitive sports alike. A strain is a tear in muscle fibers, caused when a muscle is forced to contract repeatedly or with excessive force. A sprain, by contrast, involves the ligaments that connect bone to bone.
Both are classified using a Grade I to III scale. A Grade I injury is a slight disruption of fibers with mild swelling and tenderness, and some difficulty stretching or using the area. A Grade II injury involves moderate fiber damage with more significant pain and difficulty, and possible bruising. A Grade III injury is the most severe, a complete tear.
Regardless of grade, early management focuses on rest, ice, compression, and elevation, followed by a progressive rehabilitation program matched to the severity of the injury.
