Posterior Cruciate Ligament (PCL) Tear

An injury to the stronger, less frequently injured ligament at the back of the knee, often caused by a direct impact such as the knee striking a dashboard.

A stronger ligament, less often injured.

The posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) is stronger and less frequently injured than its counterpart, the ACL. A common cause is a motor vehicle accident, when the knee strikes the dashboard on impact.

Initial treatment is rest, elevation, compression, and ice. Recovery is often supported by Physical Therapy combining progressive strengthening with functional exercise, and surgery is rarely necessary.
