Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL) Tear

A tear or stretch of the ligament on the inner knee, often from pressure applied to the outside of the joint, common in football.

An inner-knee ligament stretched by outside pressure.

MCL tears are among the most common knee ligament injuries. The MCL can be stretched or torn when significant pressure is applied to the outside of the knee, forcing the joint inward.

Signs include swelling and pain along the inner side of the knee. In severe trauma, most common in football, an MCL tear can occur alongside an ACL injury or a medial meniscal tear.

Initial treatment is rest, ice, and elevation, followed by bracing and rehabilitation. Surgery may be required for severe tears.
