Osteoporosis

A condition that makes bones more fragile and prone to fracture, affecting an estimated 44 million Americans, most often women over 50.

A major public health issue with real prevention options.

Osteoporosis is a condition in which bones become more fragile and susceptible to breaking. Left untreated or unaddressed, it can lead to fractures, most commonly in the hip, spine, and wrist.

An estimated 44 million Americans are at risk, with about 10 million already diagnosed and another 34 million living with low bone mass that raises their risk. Roughly one in three adults over 65 falls each year, and women make up about 80% of osteoporosis patients; one in two women over 50 will experience an osteoporosis-related fracture in her lifetime.

While there's no cure, several steps can slow, stop, or even help reverse its progression: a balanced diet rich in vitamin D and calcium, regular weight-bearing exercise, avoiding excessive alcohol and smoking, and appropriate medical treatment guided by your physician.
