A common, treatable condition rooted in pelvic floor function.
Incontinence refers to the loss of bladder or bowel control resulting in involuntary leakage. It can stem from decreased muscular support around the bladder and uterus, or from weakness in the pelvic floor muscles that, over time, become less able to keep those openings closed.
Stress incontinence involves leakage during physical activity, coughing, sneezing, or laughing. Urge incontinence involves involuntary bladder emptying when a strong urge to go is felt. Chronic constipation and trauma can also contribute to involuntary gas leakage. A behavioral assessment of medication, food, and fluid intake often helps identify contributing factors.
Treatment typically includes retraining bladder and bowel habits, rehabilitating the abdominal and pelvic floor muscles (sometimes with electrical stimulation), and biofeedback.
Retraining the muscles that control continence.
Our approach combines pelvic floor muscle rehabilitation, habit retraining, and biofeedback to directly address the muscular causes behind incontinence.
