Common Fitness Terms

A quick reference for the terms you'll hear most often in your Physical Therapy exercise program.

Understanding the language of your exercise program.

We want you to fully understand and get the most out of the exercise program your therapist builds for you, so here are a few of the most common terms used in fitness and rehabilitation.

Fitness describes being sound physically and mentally, essentially another word for healthy. Repetitions, often shortened to 'reps,' refers to the number of times you perform a single movement, for example, lifting a weight with your arm ten times equals ten repetitions. A set is simply a defined group of repetitions performed together before resting.

Your therapist will use these and other terms throughout your program, and is always happy to explain any term you're unsure about.
