Avascular Necrosis of the Hip

Bone death in the hip joint caused by a disrupted blood supply, often following a fracture, dislocation, or repeated trauma.

Bone tissue that loses its blood supply.

Avascular necrosis is the death of bone tissue caused by a loss or disruption of its blood supply. In the hip, this disruption is often triggered by a fracture, a dislocation, or repeated trauma to the femoral neck.

Common symptoms include pain, limited movement, and difficulty walking. The condition is typically diagnosed with X-rays, MRI, or a bone scan.

Depending on how advanced the condition is, treatment can range from conservative management to surgery to decompress the joint or, in more advanced cases, a full hip replacement.
