Acromioclavicular Separation (Separated Shoulder)

An injury to the joint between the collarbone and shoulder blade, usually from a fall directly onto the shoulder.

A joint injury from a direct fall onto the shoulder.

A fall onto the shoulder can cause an acromioclavicular (AC) separation. This typically causes pain, swelling, and sometimes a visible deformity where the collarbone appears to 'stick up.'

A separated shoulder is usually treated with rest, ice, and pain medication, along with Physical Therapy to restore motion. Surgery is rarely necessary, though in some cases the ligaments connecting the collarbone and shoulder blade may need to be repaired.
