Inflamed, pinched tendons under the shoulder blade.
Tendonitis refers to inflammation of a tendon, which can cause pain, redness, and tenderness to the touch. Rotator cuff tendonitis develops when the rotator cuff becomes overloaded, fatigued, or traumatized, or through age-related degenerative change.
Impingement happens when the rotator cuff tendons get pinched beneath the acromion, the bony projection at the tip of the shoulder blade. This is most often triggered by repeatedly raising the arm overhead, especially while carrying a load, or by certain supported-arm positions. An X-ray may reveal a bone spur that increases the likelihood of impingement.
Treatment typically includes rest, anti-inflammatory medication, and Physical Therapy to restore strength and movement; a cortisone injection is sometimes used as well.
Restoring pain-free overhead movement.
Treatment combines hands-on care to reduce tendon irritation with a strengthening and postural program that takes pressure off the impinged tendons.
