A jaw condition that frequently travels with neck pain.
Temporomandibular disorder (TMD) describes a group of conditions affecting the temporomandibular joints, the jaw joints located just in front of each ear canal. These joints rely on muscles, ligaments, cartilage, a supporting disc, and elastic tissue all working together.
Symptoms, which can come from any one or more of these structures, may include pain when chewing, yawning, or opening the jaw. Research suggests as many as a third of the population experiences TMJ symptoms at some point, and the condition is more common in women. Pain can be muscular, joint-related, or a combination of both.
The majority of TMD patients also experience neck pain, and a physical therapist is well positioned to treat both together, since the muscles and joints of the jaw and neck are closely connected.
Treating the jaw and neck together.
Because TMD and neck pain are so often connected, treatment addresses both the jaw joint itself and the surrounding neck muscles and posture for lasting relief.
