Something almost everyone experiences.
Neck pain can be mild enough to simply be distracting, or severe enough to be incapacitating. Most neck pain is minor and self-inflicted: holding your head in an awkward position for too long can cause the neck joints to 'lock' and the surrounding muscles to fatigue. Poor posture while working, reading, watching TV, or using a computer is a very common contributor.
The head, which weighs 10 to 15 pounds on average, is balanced on the spine, so poor posture and long periods of inactivity place real strain on the neck and its supporting muscles, which can lead to strains and sprains of the neck ligaments. Over time, osteoarthritis and degenerative disc disease, in which spinal discs dry out and flatten, can also contribute.
Sometimes pain radiates to the top of the shoulders or between the shoulder blades. When a nerve is pinched, a condition called radiculopathy, you may feel tingling, pain, or numbness radiating into the arm, forearm, and hand.
Persistent or recurring neck pain should be evaluated by an experienced medical professional. A physical therapist can help relieve pain quickly or make it more manageable over the longer term.
