Posterior Dislocation

A rare type of shoulder dislocation where the joint moves backward, more common in sports like baseball and tennis.

An uncommon, backward-moving dislocation.

Posterior dislocations, where the shoulder moves in the opposite direction from a typical dislocation, are rare, accounting for roughly 4% of cases. Athletes in sports like baseball and tennis are more likely to experience posterior subluxation.

As with any sudden dislocation, this is a medical emergency: the patient should go to an emergency room immediately to rule out blood vessel or nerve damage. Surgery is rarely necessary. Physical Therapy to strengthen the shoulder muscles is often started within about two weeks of the dislocation.
