One of the most common causes of heel pain.
Heel pain is most often caused by inflammation of the plantar fascia along the bottom of the foot. Contributing factors include poor calf flexibility, lack of arch support, a sudden increase in activity, poor footwear, excess pronation, or repetitive stress from activities like long-distance running.
Micro-tearing occurs where the plantar fascia attaches to the heel bone, triggering an inflammatory response that causes pain, swelling, warmth, and difficulty standing or walking. Pain is usually felt at the front of the heel and can extend into the arch.
Plantar fasciitis classically worsens first thing in the morning, since the fascia tightens overnight while it's trying to heal. If the condition persists, a bone spur can sometimes be seen on X-ray, though it's generally considered a result of the body's healing response rather than the source of pain itself.
Calming the fascia while correcting what's overloading it.
Treatment combines hands-on work to reduce fascia irritation with stretching and strengthening aimed at the calf tightness, footwear, or mechanics that are driving the problem.
